Inspired by her outstanding new album, Tiger’s Blood, it’s time I sing the praises of singer/songwriter Katie Crutchfield and her increasingly brilliant solo project, Waxahatchee, named after the lake near her family home in Alabama. I first heard about Waxahatchee when I read a great review of her second album,
I’m not deeply versed in her entire discography, but the last three albums really stood out for me. I especially loved the double Bonny backing band on Saint Cloud. It felt like a warm coat that I’ve been wearing for my whole life.
I haven’t listened to the new album yet, but I plan to this week. So many new releases lately; I’m falling behind!;) Are any of the Bonnys on this one?
It's funny how we all react differently to what we hear. While I like the new album, I actually like her first two albums so much more. They sound like the work she did with her sister as part of P.S. Eliot. I loved them.
Great write-up, even though we aren't completely on the same page about which of her albums we love best. But that's what makes music great, right? There's something for all of us!
It’s a great album, already a best of the year candidate for me. Have you seen the band live? I was able to see and photograph Waxahatchee’s 2021 and 2022 incarnations opening for Jason Isbell.
Matt, totally agree on this Waxahatchee record; already on by 2024 Best Of! Out In the Storm was my first taste – the song “Silver” still stands out as a great rock tune. Saint Cloud also still stands up as a solid album. I think Katie is the “new Lucinda Williams” and can’t wait for her future work.
Thx Steve. Not sure who is in her band on the new album. Good question! Will have to look into it.

Great piece.

Just got the new one yesterday. I've listened once all the way through and think I'm falling in love. Good review, Matt, and thanks for recommending!
I've never seen her live before. Got tix for her LA show at the Hollywood Palladium on May 16...psyched.
I've been meaning to check them out. Oddly, I haven't before now.
Ah, that's right. Different, also great band.
Agree re: the Rosali. Incredibly, I like the Wax and the Rosali more than the Adrianne Lenker, who I generally love.
