This is only a secret in the U.S. where they had no success at all, though they were signed by Warner Brothers in 1993, home to R.E.M. and Prince at the time. However, in their native Australia, You Am I are the only Australian band ever to have three consecutive #1 albums on the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) album chart. They’ve opened for Oasis and the Rolling Stones, and the Strokes opened for them on their first Australian tour in 2001. Their singer/songwriter, Tim Rogers, is something of a national treasure. I like to think of him as the Paul Westerberg and You Am I as the Replacements of Australia, though like all comparisons, it is inexact and therefore not particularly useful. He is also a big fan of the Who.
